Ethics & remembrance: Wrestling with the memory of the Holocaust

Germany has played a key role in renouncing nationalistic cultures of remembrance and fostering the memory of the Holocaust as a self-critical model of remembrance for Europe and the West. The shift in the global balance of power and the rise of digital media have helped a new, anti-colonial paradigm of commemoration to become established.

Nationalism, commemorating the Holocaust and anti-colonial remembrance are sometimes perceived as mutually incompatible alternatives. Yet this does not do justice to the facts surrounding the politics of remembrance.

The question now is: How can Holocaust commemoration and anti-colonial remembrance be combined responsibly and effectively on the regional, national and transnational levels?

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Wulf Kansteiner (Aarhus)

Introduction: Prof. Dr. Michele Barricelli (LMU)

This event is part of the Munich History Lecture series.

The lecture will be held in German. For more information, please visit the Historisches Seminar website. The lecture will be recorded.
