Ethics & remembrance: Wrestling with the memory of the Holocaust
Germany has played a key role in renouncing nationalistic cultures of remembrance and fostering the memory of the Holocaust as a self-critical model of remembrance for Europe and the West. The shift in the global balance of power and the rise of digital media have helped a new, anti-colonial paradigm of commemoration to become established.
Nationalism, commemorating the Holocaust and anti-colonial remembrance are sometimes perceived as mutually incompatible alternatives. Yet this does not do justice to the facts surrounding the politics of remembrance.
The question now is: How can Holocaust commemoration and anti-colonial remembrance be combined responsibly and effectively on the regional, national and transnational levels?
